Sam Opp is the creator of the blog Find Love and Travel.

She is passionate about reducing travel negatives — especially by messaging Instagrammers and other social influencers when they overstep the line to get the “perfect” photo.

Last February Sam was on the Kated Travel Podcast, sharing her insights into responsible travel influence with us. Here are a few highlights of her interview.

*

I’m a traveller first. I do love photography — but after every one of my trips, I’ll look back at my photos and say, “Oh, I wish I took a photo there.”

And the reason why I’m looking back saying that is because it’s so important for me to try to be present in that moment — to really experience a destination as opposed to getting the photo.

If you’re not experiencing the destination that you’re at, that’s not travelling.

*

As a travel blogger, obviously you want to share hidden gems and beautiful places. But at the same time you want to protect the environment or a community that might not be able to handle mass tourism.

*

Whether you have millions of people following you or only five, whether you’re in the travel business or not, it’s important to remember that there are people watching what you are doing.

Remember to be responsible and say “we need to respect this community”.

*

It’s also important to let the community that follows you know when it’s a Photoshopped photo — to tell them that what’s on the photo is not actually happening in real life.
